Today's walk: The Wet Sleddale Horseshoe (Wainwright's Outlying Fells p242)

Wet Sleddale Reservoir and dam from the starting point

the track beside the reservoir

the ruin of New Ing

the reservoir from the vague path above New Ing

an awkward gate leads onto the open moor and access land ..

.. so this rather unfriendly notice can be ignored unless the area is closed for shooting

looking back along the path past a line of shooting butts

the lunch house - presumably used by shooting parties

Gray Bull

the snow-flecked Pennines seen over Shap from Gray Bull

Wet Sleddale reservoir from Sleddale Pike

view west from Sleddale Pike

panorama of this view as shown in AW's book

looking back at Sleddale Pike across AW's one rough mile

Great Saddle Crag summit looking east

still pretty rough heading west with the vaguest of tracks to follow and lots of bog

Wet Sleddale reservoir from the undistinguished top of Ulthwaite Rigg

zooming in down Sleddale Beck to the reservoir

better going (but still wet in places) on the bridleway

looking down on the old deer enclosures from the bridleway

zooming in on the deer enclosures (unlike AW I did not visit them - they are well off route)

Wet Sleddale reservoir from the bridleway

zooming in on the new 'packhorse' bridge, Sleddale Beck - only crossed on the shorter return route

the bridleway now keeps well away from the wall lower down to avoid the worst of the bog

V.R. postbox noted by AW

a new footbridge is just being built near Thorney Bank ..

.. so I did this walk a bit too soon

compensation was the lovely light along the lane
