Today's walks: Gummer's How and Staveley Fell (Wainwright's Outlying Fells p44 & p48)

Gummer's How from the start of the path

the path up Gummer's How

the foot of Windermere from the slopes of Gummer's How

Gummer's How summit Ordnance column

AW calls it an old man's mountain but all ages were coming up today

the Coniston fells barely visible from the top

slightly clearer northwards to the head of Windermere

zooming in on Red Screes and Caudale Moor

the Coniston fells appear when I am nearly down to the road

the start of the path from Staveley to Staveley Fell

a totally different walk despite being such close neighbours

Staveley Fell appears as soon as the path leaves the trees

looking back across the valley to Finsthwaite Heights

AW mentions stiles but these have gone and waymarks point to this rough track

it's easier to go through the gate and turn left on the forest road

despite AW's pleas access to the open fell has not been made any easier

looking back into the trees as I emerge onto open fell

the first cairn looking towards the highest tops

Windermere from the first top

the foot of Windermere from the west top

zooming in on Dow Crag and Coniston Old Man with a hovering kestrel

Wetherlam and the Langdale Pikes seen over Windermere

zooming in on the Fairfield horseshoe

rough going down beside the wall ..

.. and a few hazards

the return track is now very clear but not very inviting
