Today's walk: Whitbarrow (Wainwright's Outlying Fells p36)

the south west end of the Whitbarrow escarpment

two deer near Mill Side

the track on and off the hill is now signed so the walk could be done in either direction

zigzags in the river Kent as it flows into the Kent estuary

looking north to Lord's Seat from the first big cairn on the ridge ..

.. and from the second one with Chapel Head Scar on the left

looking over the southwestern slopes of Whitbarrow into the Winster Valley

looking over the escarpment to Witherslack Hall

zooming in on Witherslack Hall ..

.. and one more shot of it over Chapel Head Scar

looking to the summit from a very windblown tree

the Howgill Fells seen over one of the low escarpments on the ridge

heading for Lord's Seat the highest point of Whitbarrow

looking back from the highest point towards Morecambe Bay

Lord's Seat summit cairn looking north to the Lakeland fells

looking northwest from the summit ..

.. and zooming in on the Langdale Pikes

the elusive tarn on the ridge now little more than a weed choked puddle

the Lakeland fells from the north ridge ..

.. and from the north top (a diversion from AW's route)

zooming in over the Lyth Valley and the northern escarpment from the north top

drift mine entrance passed on the way down

the start of the descent path

a permissive path through the wood would shorten the return route ..

.. but miss this close up of Witherslack Hall (now a school)

looking back along the lane used by AW, now in heavy rain

Chapel Head Scar from the lane ..

.. and from the footpath lower down

the path back through the woods
