Today's walk: Top o'Selside (Wainwright's Outlying Fells p92)

the start track beside a wall

looking back down the track onto High Nibthwaite

AW's ascent route ascends the rake just left of the top ..

.. he marks a clear track but there is no sign of it now through the bracken below the rake ..

.. and the rake is choked with gorse - having been warned I brought invaluable gardening gloves

looking back down this ghastly route from the top of the rake

as AW said "I ought to have more bloody sense at my age"

the big cairn on the nameless summit 748'

Coniston Water from the 748' summit

approaching what AW calls the second cairn

Coniston Water from the second cairn

the foot of Coniston Water from the second cairn

panoramic shot of Coniston Water from the second cairn

Low Light Haw summit cairn looking back south towards the nameless 748' top

the cairn on High Light How which is a bit south of the highest point

the small quarry below High Light How looking onwards to Top o' Selside

the foot of Coniston Water from the slopes of Top o'Selside

summit cairn on Top o'Selside looking north to the Helvellyn ridge

a good path now heads south west from the summit so no need for a rough route westwards

the new path joining the bridleway with Coniston Water below

the stony descent path with an escape route over this short distance

the last bit of the path returning to High Nibthwaite
