Today's walk: an aborted attempt on Helvellyn followed by an ascent of Great How

setting off beside Helvellyn Gill towards Browncove Crags

looking back down on Thirlmere

looking north to Skiddaw and Lonscale Fell in the distance

in unpleasant gusty east winds I spot an attractive escape on the western flanks of White Side

the clouds are speeding over the top of Browncove Crags

my descent is by the 'White Stones' path here looking to Skiddaw, Blencathra and High Rigg

on the contouring path back to Swirls

Great How from this path as it approaches the intake wall

zooming in along St John's in the Vale to Blencathra

the lakeside path from Swirls to Great How

looking back along the path with Thirlmere below

Raven Crag from the lakeshore path

Whiteside from the path - my descent route came down diagonally above these trees

scattered pines looking to Raven Crag

looking up Thirlmere from the slopes of Great How

Browncove Crags still looking windy from the slopes of Great How

Thirlmere from the north top of Great How

Thirlmere dam from the north top of Great How

the higher south top from the north top

Thirlmere from the path to the south top

the north top from the brash strewn slopes of the south top

the south top occupied by a felling camp - all the summit trees will go they told me

Raven Crag on the descent from the south top

descending the track from Great How

the continuation of the lakeside path

looking up the very choppy lake from the path
