Winter

Tomorrow I may be in heaven,
Tomorrow I may be in hell,
Tomorrow I may be only ashes
Scattered on Bleaberry Fell.

But today the bogs are frozen, today the sun shines bright;
Too soon it will be setting on the long dark winter night.
Today I'll walk these lovely hills where lark and curlew cry;
I'll weep to see their beauty but I will not question why.

Yesterday I pondered,
Yesterday I thought,
I came to one conclusion,
That life is too damn short.

But today my heart is beating, today my legs are strong,
Today I'll stride from peak to peak singing a cheerful song.
Today I'll walk this wondrous world and will not seek to know
The secrets of that long dark night beyond the sunset glow.
